1.Overview
The Department of Nursing which held its 100th anniversary on 2012, has the oldest history among Chonnam National University’s various departments. In its initial stages, it opened Korean women’s consciousness and eyes to the world; women who had previously only stayed home. Since then, we have contributed to women's education and opportunities for professional employment.
In 1971, the nursing department was licensed as a 4-year school and admitted the first freshmen the very next year. In 2005, the department was promoted to a nursing college, defining us as a leader of nursing in the Honam area.
The undergraduate curriculum is focused on training creative and talented global nurses and creating new jobs via innovative teaching/learning strategies. After 4 years of study, students acquire a license through the state exam. Depending on their choice, students can also acquire a health teacher certification. The graduate curriculum includes a masters course and a Ph.D.. In the masters course, there are four courses (family care, geriatrics, oncology, and hospice) in which students can acquire a nurse practitioner qualification along with a master’s degree.

2.Educational philosophy
Nursing is an applied science that investigates, develops, verifies, and examines the relations between human health, humanity, environment, and nursing. To achieve these goals, the department of nursing is educating students based on the following educational philosophies:
- Humanity : Humanity is a holistic existence, having physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual needs. Humans are constantly interacting organisms motivated by a desire to learn and mature through the internal and external environments and to maintain harmony .
- Environment : The environment is a whole concept that surrounds the human condition internally and externally. It has an indivisible relationship with the subject and is a factor that affects human health. There are physical, psychological and social environments. The internal environment contains cells, tissue, and organs and the external environment contains the family, community, and nation. Environments have an open system to maintain dynamic balance.
- Health : Health is a dynamic equilibrium through interaction between the subject and changing environments. It refers to the best state of well-being harmonized and balanced safely in the environment.
- Nursing : Nursing is an act of professional care based on humanism through the critical thinking process and scientific method. In the therapeutic relationship, nurses help nursing subjects to harmonize with their internal and external environments in order to promote their welfare.
- Science of nursing : The science of nursing is a synergy of individuals, families, and social health. This is based on basic concepts such as humanity, the environment, and nursing. These concepts are scientifically explored, developed, and verified as knowledge.
- Nursing subjects : Nursing subjects can be individuals, families, and communities, as well as people ranging from the infirm to the healthy. The focus is on the maintenance and promotion of health, disease prevention, recovery, and reaching one's optimal condition.
- Nursing education : Nursing education is the interaction between the learner and the teacher so that the student can provide appropriate nursing at the field.
